Natural Resource Management & Livelihoods

Being a dry region, Warangal district often goes through erratic monsoons and since most agriculture – which is the major source of livelihood in the region – gets affected, there is a need to improvise on farming techniques and proper natural resource management that would safeguard the interests of the farming communities and the others who are dependent on it.

Pragathi Seva Samithi is implementing the following activities under Natural Resource Management

  1. Watershed Development
  2. Organic Farming
  3. Umbrella Program on Natural Resource Management
  4.  Food Security
  5. Farmer Clubs.
  6. Strengthening Dairy Cooperatives

 

Watershed Development: As part of improving natural resources, we have implemented 10 Watersheds in 10 habitations for improving ground water and creating employment for poor people and addressed the migration for land less Labour. The major components are soil and moisture Conservation, Livelihoods and Productivity Enhancement. The program has provided wage employment for about 5672 families and increased agriculture productivity by 30% and brought 40 % of fallow lands into to cultivable lands. The cropping patters have changed and the farmers have shifted from mono farming to crop diversity.  The Watershed program has enabled the poor rural communities to access the financial inclusion and promoted the leadership in the community.

Organic Farming: To improve the soil health and farmer health we have promoted Organic farming in 22 villages, the small and marginal farmers are provided organic farming extension services from seed sowing to harvesting, facilitate the marketing linkages.

A part from the production of organic farming PSS has also created marketing linkages for the organic cotton, we have organized the farmers into organic farmers cooperative for collective production and Marketing. Since 2005 PSS facilitated marketing for 780 quintals averagely. The farmers got 30% as compared to the conventional farmers. The organic farming as given multiple benefits to the farmers and address the distress in the region.  

NABARD-UPNRM: As part of creating livelihoods of poor PSS implemented Umbrella Program on Natural Resource Management with the support of NABARD, the program not only created income generation for the poor farmers but also addressed the natural resource management through conservation and augmentation of natural resource management. We have promoted dairy, sheep, vermicompost, SRI paddy and fishery activity under the program for 610 small and marginal farmers in 31 villages covering 8 blocks   of Warangal district.

Food Security: Paragathi seva has been actively engaged in promotion of food security for poor and needy section. PSS implemented promotion of food crops through promotion of Millet cultivation with 100 farmers in 3 villages of Nellikudur mandal. The program addressed the availability of nutritional food for poor people and the fallen lands were brought into cultivation. The degraded crops like Baajra, Jowhar and fox tail millets were revitalized.

Farmer Clubs: The farmers were organized into village level institutions for dissemination of knowledge and new technology for better production through promotion of 250 farmer clubs. The farmers are organized into a village level group; the farmers are provided by interface meeting with agriculture and allied subjects key resource persons. The farmer club members are doing savings and lending internally, the farmer club is playing a vital role as an intermediary between farmers and the Bank. 

Dairy Development Program: To improve supplementary incomes of marginal societies PSS has promoted 35 village level dairy societies with the support of Rabobank foundation. PSS has mobilized credit support from NABARD for purchase of milk animals. PSS provided credit to 485 dairy farmers. A part from the credit support PSS provided forward and backward linkages for dairy development. We have created marketing linkage for 35 villages with Vijaya and Thirumala dairy companies. The dairy farmers were organized into a Farmers owned Producer Company i.e. Pragathi Farm Products Producer Company Ltd.
